Intern & Volunteer Duties

Description of Organization

The Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center provides mediation and conflict resolution services to the diverse communities in the Los Angeles region. Through our mediation services, we offer people an alternative to costly and time-consuming court services. We also strive to improve human relations and race relations by addressing complex, cross-cultural community conflicts and their root causes through collaboration with community partners. We are dedicated to serving traditionally underserved and under-represented people in order to ensure equal access for all.


Internship - Conflict Resolution Specialists (CRS)

Get training and experience needed to become a certified mediator for both regular and litigated disputes. This is a program designed to provide training and practice opportunity for candidates who are interested in the legal, social service and political sector. You will have a chance to experience the "behind the scenes" work for legal professionals as well as frontline practice of mediation from the very beginning to the end. The internship is open to all backgrounds; we especially encourage candidates with legal, social services, psychology and communication background(s) with bilingual skills to apply.

Internship candidates will be responsible for the following tasks after a minimum 25-hour mediation and conflict resolution training:

•     Conduct case intake interviews, interacting with clients, performing casework
•     Observe and perform mediation and conciliation
•     Assist with community education, public presentations, outreach programs and
         day-to-day office operations
•     After finishing the internship, the candidate will receive a certificate of mediation 
         training and professional practice.

Requirements:

We are looking for candidates who have an interest in community and grassroots work. Applicants should be organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented and willing to learn. Strong writing and speaking skills preferred. Bilingual students (Asian languages plus Spanish) are expecially encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to complete a minimum of 160 hours over a 4-month period. Minimum time commitment is 8 hours, 2 half-days per week Monday through Friday.


Internship - Volunteer and Intern Coordinator


Candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

•    Update and organize recruitment materials and documents
•    Process applications and contact applicants
•    Assist with recruitment outreach and participate in relevant events
•    Assist with training materials

Requirements:

We are looking for candidates with interests in human resources. Applicants should be well organized, detail-oriented and willing to learn. Strong writing and communications skills preferred. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required. Interns are expected to commit 12 hours in the office per week over a 4-month period.


Internship - Marketing/Development Assistant

Learn critical fundraising, marketing and administrative skills applicable in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, while contributing to making positive changes in our communities. APADRC is seeking a Development/Marketing Intern to assist the Development Director in planning and executing a variety of events. This position requires at least 10 hours per week, but may be negotiable depending on schedules and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

•    Contributes to the success of APADRC's fundraising events by helping with a variety of
        tasks, including: networking, soliciting donations and/or silent auction items, working
        with vendors, writing letters, designing flyers and other marketing materials, and day-of
        logistics (such as coordinating event volunteers).
•    Helps raise money from individual donors through direct mail campaigns by writing
        letters, reviewing the mailing list and helping prepare the mailing.
•    Ensures we have accurate records for our donors and their giving history by
        maintaining the donor database.
•    Writes articles for the eNewsletter and other forms of communication.
•    Completes other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

Preferably a Junior or Senior at a 4-year accredited college, but other years will be considered based on experience. Must have basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Fluency in an Asian language and/or Spanish is a plus but not required.
